February 2009 Newsletter

In this February newsletter you'll find:

This month, in honor of Valentines Day, we are focusing our newsletter articles and radio show on the theme of love relationships.

I'm still basking in the glow of my 25th wedding anniversary, which we spent on a warm, sunny beach, in a stunningly beautiful tropical paradise, dining on seafood feasts while watching the sunset, and walking along the surf in the moonlight each night. Neither one of us has many romantic bones in our bodies, but heck, who couldn't be romantic in that setting!

Now, as I look out my window at the cold, wintry ice and snow, I've rekindled that warmth by writing an article on puppy love and first crushes (see below). I am sitting here with a big smile on my face, butterflies in my stomach and a warm glow all over. I don't actually recall who my first love was, although I do remember my first kiss! I was a typical girl who practically had a crush on a different boy each week! But it doesn't matter who it was; it's the feelings the memory still brings that have lingered all these years.

Everyone will agree that relationships take time, attention and effort for them to really "work" and flourish. Some of us had better role models than others. Some of us have had bad experiences that hurt us so deeply that it's hard to open up or trust someone again. Some of us just lose our heads when the hormones rise and make stupid decisions, even though we are the most capable responsible adults in other areas of our lives. Whoever we are, we probably have some questions or issues related to our love life.

So this month is dedicated to answering as many of those questions as we can... I gotcha covered from a parenting perspective with answers to questions about your children's love lives - starting with an article on puppy love. Then, I have a special guest coming to Parents Tool Talk Radio who will rejuvenate all you tired, weary parents who just don't have the energy to even think of a date let alone plan or go on one. Keep reading for more details about both... (If you are a single parent, we'll have special features for you next month!)

Exciting News!

The Parent's Toolshop® book featured in national professional publication

College level family interaction texts and classes usually emphasize developmental theories, parenting frameworks, and empirical studies related to children and parents. Dr. Stolz studied whether students' parenting skills can be significantly improved by using a curriculum that integrates hands-on, practical skills with these theories and research findings. The students in the treatment group used The Parent's Toolshop (Pawel, 2000) as the primary required text for their 10-week parenting course. This taught them the hands-on relationship skills and Dr. Stolz discussed in class the linkages between these skills and developmental and parenting theories. To measure the effectiveness of parenting behaviors, both before and after the treatment and control curricula, the Outcome-Focused Parenting Skill Assessments instrument (Pawel, 1998) was modified.

The article is entitled "I Want to be a Better Parent: Examining an Applied Approach to an Undergraduate Parent-Child Course," by Heidi E. Stolz, University of Tennessee, published in Family Science Review, Volume 14 - No. 1, January, 2009. Read the full article here.
