Parents Toolshop® Newsletter - May 2009
Celebrating Moms

In this month's newsletter you'll find:

This May, in celebration of Mother's Day, we at Parents Toolshop want to recognize, encourage, and thank all the mothers of the world...

  • New moms... Congratulations on completing a nine-month project, at the end of which you labored and gave birth. Savor this first year by focusing exclusively on loving for, caring for, and building a bond with your baby. It is the foundation on which you will build a lifetime relationship. Remember to rest when you can; you need your energy now and to store up for the next year.

  • Experienced moms... Congratulations on surviving many ups and downs as your children grow from 1 to 18 and beyond. These are the the most important years in your child's life and you will be one of the biggest influences in their life. Educate yourself so you can have the awareness, knowledge and skills to do the very best job you can.

  • Foster moms... Thank you for the impact you make in children's lives in the days or months you have them in your life. We know how difficult it is to love a child, bond with them, and raise them, only to have to let them go and say goodbye. We admire your courage and selflessness.

  • Adoptive moms... Thank you for making a lifetime commitment to a child who may have no history or one that you know may pose challenges in the future, for loving them like they came from your womb, and for giving them a forever home and lifetime of love.

  • Grandmothers... thank you for supporting your adult children in their greatest task --- being a parent --- without interfering or taking over, but by being there, pitching in, respecting their wishes, providing respite care, and being a helpful member of the parenting partner "team."

  • Kinship caregivers... thanks for providing a stable home, temporarily or permanently, while your relatives are unable to do so. Just because you are family doesn't obligate you to make this commitment. We appreciate your willingness to be there for your family.

Things Mothers Learn From Kids

Here's a short list of the ten things our children teach us as mothers... things we might never have known otherwise!

  1. A 4-year-old's voice is louder than 200 adults in a crowded restaurant.
  2. When you hear the toilet flush and the words, "Uh-oh," it's already too late.
  3. Lego's will pass through the digestive tract of a 4-year-old.
  4. Duplo's will not.
  5. You probably do not want to know what that odor is.
  6. Play Dough and Microwave should never be used in the same sentence.
  7. VCR's do not eject PB&J sandwiches even though TV commercials show they do.
  8. You should not throw baseballs in the air when the ceiling fan is on.
  9. Quiet does not necessarily mean don’t worry.

    And finally, number 10...

  10. Always look in the oven before you turn it on.
