Parents Toolshop® Newsletter - June 2009
A Salute To Fathers |
In this month's newsletter you'll find:
Happy Father's Day to all the Dads who are part of our international Parents Toolshop® network of parents! This month, we salute YOU!
Myths about fathers and fatherhood abound in society today. One such myth is that single mothers can compensate for an absent father with no ill effects on their children. This attitude makes it seem as if fathers are just another disposable item in the nursery! Nothing could be further from the truth.
Research on fatherhood in the last decade has revealed some startling facts. The most shocking is that "the overwhelming 'root cause' of crime is fatherlessness." William Niskanen, chairman of the Cato Institute, observed that most variables that are said to determine the crime rate have not changed since 1960 - except the increase in single-parent homes. Barbara Dafoe Whitehead, sociologist, says, the causal link between fatherlessness and crime "is so strong that controlling for family configuration erases the relationship between race and crime and between low income and crime."
This research backs up what children's hearts have known for years. Children not only need a father, they long for one. Loving, involved fathers contribute to a child's emotional development and overall well-being in ways that no one else can provide. So when fathers have to be absent due to work, military demands or divorce, the effects can be more profound than one might imagine. It takes extra effort to compensate for forced separations like these, but it can be done!
So fathers everywhere, be involved with your children. If you didn't have a good role model, then seek out training, support and resources that can help you become the kind of father you want to be, deep in your heart. Access resources like those I've listed in this newsletter and The Parent's Toolshop® book, which dads love because of its straight-forward, logical, step-by-step, parenting plan and practical language and action tools.
As you build your competence, you naturally gain confidence. As you open your heart to express unconditional love, you will grow and develop more self-esteem and self-respect. The communication skills you learn and use will not only build a close relationship with your children, but will improve just about every relationship you have. Together, your enhanced abilities and relationships will leave you feeling more fulfilled and complete than you could have ever imagined.
Happy Father's Day! |
