Parents Toolshop Newsletter July 2009 - Parenting Older Children
|
|
In this month's newsletter you'll find:
Parenting is a lifetime job that has many distinct phases, and each phase has its own unique dynamics and challenges. This month, we are focusing on parenting older teen and adult children.
When our children become older teens, from ages 16-18, we begin the transition from parenting children to parenting adults. As those first few years of adulthood pass, the relationship changes into more of an adult-to-adult relationship — but we are still their parents. It can all get very weird and awkward for parents and some common problems can arise.
As a parent educator. some of my greatest challenges involve supporting parents of older/adult children. Particularly difficult are the times I try to support parents of teen and young adult children who have mental health or drug issues. It is so heartbreaking to see their agony and pain as they watch their children suffer and realize they are very limited in what they can do to help.
Our goal this month is to support parents of children who are exiting their teenage years, moving into adulthood, and leaving the nest. Hopefully we will also help parents in another phase of their child's life, but who are already preparing for that inevitable day!
So this month, I've invited some special guests on Parents Tool Talk to talk with me about "Parenting Adult Children." I also have several great resources for parenting of older teens and young adults. I hope you have a chance to check them out. As always, if you have a friend or colleague who may benefit from these resources, please forward this newsletter along. |
