Parents Toolshop® Newsletter
September 2009 - Blended Families

In this month's newsletter you'll find:

September is Back-To-School time, so I always remind parents to check out my "baker's dozen" of articles on back-to school issues. There, I offer practical tips for a wide variety of back-to-school issues, including:

  • Helpful Ways To Get Back Into The School Routine,
  • Teaching Children Organizational Skills,
  • Preparing Kindergartners For School,
  • Deciding Whether Your Older Children Are Ready To Be Home Alone,
  • Building Teamwork At Parent-Teacher Conferences,
  • Halting Homework Hassles,
  • Preventing Extra-Curricular Overload,
  • And More.

In preparation for this month's radio show on "Blended Families," I recall the hundreds of parents in blended families who have attended my workshops over the years. Every one of them was committed to making their new family work. Usually, the parents and children were willing to work together as a team, which is an absolute delight to see, but just needed some practical tips for getting through the almost-universal and common challenges that can happen when blending two (or more) families.

Now and then, they faced much deeper challenges. Some parents realize that their parenting styles aren't as compatible as they had hoped, or they agree but the ex-spouses' parenting is so different it seems to undo whatever good they try to create. Sometimes the children don't like each other or get along, or they don't respect the step-parent. I'm looking forward to discussing these issues with our guest expert and getting practical tips to help parents create a healthy new family. So read on for more information about the radio show, resources and articles you can read on subjects related to blended families.

Send Me Your Stories

I am so excited! A major publisher is reviewing my next book, a shorter version of "The Parents Toolshop" that I am writing this year. I know, it's LONG overdue!

I want to include some fresh stories from parents, like you. For example, problems you experienced and how you solved them using what you learned, funny situations and what you said/did . Any dialogues you can recall that illustrate the real-life applications of the skills you learned in the book/class would be particularly helpful.

I also need fresh testimonials about the results you've received from reading the book. I've heard many miraculous stories but don't have them all in writing or always recall who told me.

Do you have anything to send me? I'm actively writing the book now, so the sooner you send a story the more likely I will be able to use it in the book. I hope to finish the book by the end of January so if you could send them soon, that would be ideal.

Please send stories and testimonials about the book to me at Pawel@ParentsToolshop.com and put "story" or "testimonial" somewhere in the subject line. Of course, since you are a loyal supporter who gets my newsletter, you'll get a nice discount on the book when it's ready. Contributors will get their books personalized/autographed.

The shorter book is due to YOUR requests, so thank you in advance
for your assistance and support.

Parents Tool Talk Radio

This September on Parents Tool Talk we will discuss Blended Families. Parents of blended families face a unique set of challenges in bringing their families together. In this program, host Jody Johnston Pawel, LSW, CFLE and author of The Parent's Toolshop, and special guest Deborah Cashen, CFLE will reach out to these parents with support and practical advice for meeting many of those challenges.

Deborah and Jody will discuss topics such as:

  • Differences between the rights of parents and step-parents
  • Coordinating visitation and other parenting time
  • How do parents manage the change from parenting one home to 2 homes or more?
  • What can parents of blended families do to help their children become friends?
  • What kind of issues arise when children are transitioning between homes,
and how can parents effectively manage those transitions?
  • How can parents work through parenting style issues, both between themselves
    and their exes?
  • And as always, your questions!
