Parents Toolshop® Newsletter December 2009
"Consumerism And Other Holiday Issues"

In this month's newsletter you'll find:

Well, in a few days we will officially be in the holiday season! Many of us are now starting to gear up for those gift-giving holidays and may become stressed or depressed with by all the focus on materialism and spending money. At those times, I hope you'll remember to shift your focus towards the true meaning of each holiday and most important aspects of this season: gratitude, giving to others, and spending quality time with family and friends. None of these cost a cent, yet can be the most "valuable" aspects of our experience and memories.

If you do, however, want some suggestions for dealing with consumerism, children with the Gimmees, or ideas for shifting the holiday focus from materialism to family, then we have some great information to share with you this month...

This Month on Parents Tool Talk Radio:
"Consumerism and other Holiday Issues"

This month on the Parents Tool Talk Radio Show, we will offer thoughtful and helpful advice on how parents can confidently navigate many of the joys and stresses each holiday season brings. This includes gift-giving and receiving, the commercialization of the holidays, and having a season of celebration that helps build lasting memories for families.

Our special guest expert is Susan Vogt. Susan is a freelance speaker and writer in the areas of marriage, parenting, and spirituality. She has a Masters degree in counseling and has been a professional family minister for over 30 years. Susan has taught at the college level and gives workshops around the USA and the world. She is the author of Raising Kids Who Will Make A Difference.

Some of the topics we will discuss include:

  • History of Santa and the commercialization of holidays
  • Knowing what and how much to buy for children
  • How to handle over-indulgent gifts from, or inconsistent gifts
    between, grandparents and other relatives
  • How celebration and gift-giving changes as children become adults
  • Whether to include Santa in family celebrations, and if so,
how to do it without getting trapped into lying or deceiving children
  • And as always, your questions
