Parents Toolshop® Newsletter February 2010
"Empty Nesters"

In this month's newsletter you'll find:

This month's theme is "Empty Nesters," and boy can I relate! Our nest has been empty for over a year now. This month alone we celebrated my youngest child's 21st birthday and we're planning a wedding!

Parenting does end when children turn 18; nor does it end when they leave home. While we say The Parents Toolshop® is for parents of children ages 1-18, anyone who has read the book or taken a class knows the skills are equally effective with adults -- including adult children.

Whether your children are brand new to the world or ready to head out into it, or any age in between, this topic is relevant to you, %$firstname$%! The time our children are at home is truly shorter than we can imagine.

My transition has been easier than it is for many, and I owe part of this to the fact that I started thinking about -- and planning for -- this stage of my life when my children were first born. Years ago, I read a book called Sequencing, by Arlene Rossen Cardozo. It's an old book by now, but its message is timeless: "You can have it all -- just not all at once." The book proposed a plan that I've followed for the past 25 years. When we view our parenting years as a continuum, we realize we don't have to accomplish everything right away. We can pursue our dreams in stages, as our children grow older and more independent. By the time they leave home, we are ready for that empty nest.

This month we're devoting our radio show and all of our featured resources to the topic of "Empty Nesters." I hope you check them out, %$firstname$%. I know you'll find tips and in-depth information that you can use right away, even if you have a very full nest of young "chicks."
