Parents Toolshop® Newsletter March 2010
"Teaching Values to Children and Teens"

Greetings from Parents Toolshop®! In this month's newsletter you'll find:

I hope this newsletter finds you well --- and if you have been inundated with snow this winter, I hope this finds you safe and warm, with wishes that Spring will arrive soon in your neck of the woods. To help with that task, we have lots of resources to share this month that I hope will "warm you up" a bit.

Our theme this month is "Teaching Children and Teens Values." This is an important topic, because every parent teaches their children values, whether they do it intentionally or not. At the least, children are learning your values from what you say and how you behave.

If you want to intentionally teach children values, I have lots of information to help you know what to say and do. My radio show guest expert and I will tell you what to do when your children are exposed to values you don't want your children to pick up and how to handle situations where you see that their values are contrary to yours, without getting into preachy lectures or power struggles.

Most importantly, we want to calm any fears you might have if your teen seems to be heading down the wrong path and you wonder if they've heard anything you've said or if they'll "turn out all right."

Friday, March 12, 2010 - "Teaching Values to Children and Teens"
With Jody Pawel and special guest Harriet Heath, Ph.D.

The title says it all! This month on Parents Tool Talk we will discuss how parents can model and teach values to their children and teens. Some of the the topics we will discuss include:

  • How does effective value teaching change as children get older?
  • What if a child has been exposed to contrary values? How can parents respond?
  • And as always, your questions!

Our special guest expert, Dr. Harriet Heath, is a licensed psychologist and has worked for over thirty years with parents of children of all ages. She has lived in settings as varied as urban Philadelphia and an Alaskan Eskimo village. Among her publications is the award winning book, Using Your Values to Raise a Child You Admire as an Adult.

And children need to learn this. In this article, Jody lists the key skills and techniques to use to teach children values, applied to this relevant, timely topic. (read more)
