Parents Toolshop® Newsletter April 2010
"Emotional Abuse"

In this month's newsletter you'll find:

Almost everyone I have talked to lately has commented on how grateful they are that Spring is finally here. I’ve heard it from West Coasters who endured unusually hard, long rains, Midwesterners who have endured a cold, snowy winter and have not seen the sun for months, and East Coasters who still see foot-high piles of snow scattered about. Spring always seems to be a sign of new beginnings and a renewed appreciation for the little (and big) things in life.

I have also seen this gratitude reflected in the lives of the people who attend my programs, through parents who are getting a fresh start at building a loving, healthy family with the tools they learned in Parent’s Toolshop,® and people who have discovered the Inner Secrets for a Stress-Free Life.

Personally, April is the one-year anniversary of my being cured of a life-long physical condition that had become debilitating. I have a new lease on life through good health and feel extra grateful this year.

We each have much to be thankful for this Spring. May you enjoy your New Beginnings, however it shows up for you, and know that I am here to support you.

This Month on Parents Tool Talk Radio

Friday, April 9, 2010 - "Emotional Abuse"
With Jody Pawel and special guest Dr. SaraKay Smullens

This month on Parents Tool Talk we will confront the issue of emotional abuse, defining it, examining it in detail, and offering real-world advice on what to do (and what NOT to do) when they see emotional abuse occurring.

Our special guest expert, SaraKay Smullens, is a licensed diplomate in clinical social work and and a trained family therapist and educator. She has been certified as a group psychotherapist by American Group Psychotherapy Association and as a Certified Family Life Educator by the National Council on Family Relations.

Some of the topics we will discuss include:

  • What is emotional abuse? How prevalent is it?
  • How well is emotional abuse addressed by professionals?
  • What are the different forms emotional abuse takes, and how does it progress?
  • What can you do if you know a family where emotional abuse is occurring?
  • How can you respond to emotional abuse in public?
  • When should emotional abuse be reported?
  • And as always, your questions!

This show will air LIVE on Friday, April 9, 12pm US Eastern Time.
Show Length: 1 Hour

School Toolshop®

School Toolshop® is in full swing! I am available for parenting programs in school districts nationwide. The remainder of this school year is booked solid, so I am scheduling for Fall and next school year now. By Fall, there will also be certified Teacher Toolshop® instructors who are both experienced teachers and Toolshop® grads who will be available for Teacher Toolshop® programs. If you’d like a program in your area, please go to the School Toolshop Page and download a brochure. Or contact our Speaker Coordinator, Belinda Long at BelindaL@ParentToolshop.com and have her send you one or more print brochures. A print brochure hand-delivered to a principal by a parent/professional, with a personal recommendation, is always the best way to bring Toolshop® programs to your district. You can check out the the School Toolshop Page or contact Belinda Long for more details.

Speaking While Traveling

I will likely be traveling to San Diego July 13-16 and upstate New York September 20-24, 2010. If you have a group you would like me to talk to (freewill fee & I can sell resources) about parenting, I would be happy to do so. Click here to see a list of topics I can present. I can also offer professional CEU workshops (for a participant fee). Click here for a list of these programs.

All I need is a location and assistance with publicity distribution! For more details, contact my Speaker Coordinator, Belinda Long, at BelindaL@ParentsToolshop.com or me at Pawel@ParentsToolshop.com.

New Dayton Daily News Expert Page

As some of you may know, the 937moms web site is no longer available. The Dayton Daily News is in the process of migrating all my parenting expert articles to a new expert page at the main newspaper site. Once all my articles have been archived, I’ll be adding new articles. Click here to view my new expert page.

Take a 1-3 Minute Survey and Get a Thank-You Gift!

Last month, we wrapped up our third open question-and-answer radio show, and would like to know whether this format has been a value to you.

We're also two potential summer tele-classes, and we want to hear about what content you would like us to provide.

To help make it easy for you to give us feedback, we've created a brief 5-question survey that should only take 1 to 3 minutes of your time, and we have a special thank-you gift at the end! Click here to complete the survey and receive your thank-you gift!

Join our Facebook Community

We'd like to get more people posting to our Facebook page. We especially want people who have read the book, listened to a teleseminar, heard my radio show, or attended a Toolshop parenting class to post their comments. Some of the emails and comments you all make to me would be so valuable in helping other parents feel affirmed and supported. I also know many of you like to recommend Parents Toolshop to others or want to share your experiences. This is a great way to do that.

Here's what to do:

  1. Go to the Parents Toolshop Facebook Page.
  2. Log in to Facebook by entering your username and password at the top of the page.
  3. Click the "Become a Fan" button.
  4. Enter your comment in the box marked "What's on your mind?" and click the "Share" button.

In closing, I'm encouraging you to look for all those first signs of Spring and to enjoy watching your children grow both physically and emotionally.

If you have a question or comment you would like me to address, please email our newsletter at support@parentstoolshop.com

Yours in Service to Families,

Jody
