Parents Toolshop® Newsletter June 2010

*See end of message for instructions on forwarding this newsletter to others*

In this month's newsletter you'll find:

For Mother's Day, my husband gave me a cute card that said, “Women would have no stress at all if not for three things: Men, children … and men who act like children.”

We all laughed because the entire family jokes about my husband being my third child. He's the one that gets bored easily and will stack creamer cups or start paper wad fights at the dinner table. He's always on the go, suggesting the family visit a museum, hike in the woods, or play a game.

It was the child in him that appealed to me, since I had such a serious childhood and didn't learn to have fun. Yet he's also my best friend and soul mate, empathetic and supportive, incredibly intelligent with good common sense, responsible and a stable provider for our family.

Fathers are often teased for their child-like actions, yet it's those very qualities that endear them to us. In television, fathers are usually portrayed as lazy, dim-witted imbeciles who have no clue how to raise children and rely on their all-together wives to clue them into what their children need. This is the exception, not the rule --- at least from what I've seen in my 30 years training thousands of fathers nationwide.

Most dads, like my husband, are more than just playmates. They are a mom's best friend, good listeners to their wives and children, equal partners around the house, stable providers and good financial managers, patient homework tutors, and all-around great guys.

So cheers to Dads everywhere who know how to live a life of balance. Who spend quality time with their children, but know how to be more than playmates. Who provide for their families but aren't workaholics. Who are empathetic and caring, but not soft and wishy-washy. In other words…

Happy Father's Day to Dads everywhere.
Especially those in the Parent's Toolshop community.
We love and appreciate YOU!

Friday, June 11th on Parents Tool Talk Radio
"Overindulgence"
With Jody Pawel and special guest Jean Illsley Clarke, CFLE

What is overindulgence? Can we really give too much to our kids? If so, why do we do it and how do we know when it's happening? These are just a few of the questions Jody will discuss with special guest Jean Illsley Clarke on our June 11th, installment of Parents Tool Talk Radio.

Jean Illsley Clarke, Ph.D. CFLE, is a nationally certified, and internationally known, parent educator and workshop leader. She is the author or co-author of several additional books about families, including Self-Esteem: A Family Affair, Growing Up Again, and Time-In: When Time-Out Doesn't Work. She won the 1995 Eric Berne Memorial Award in the area of practice applications for her work in applied Transactional Analysis in parent education.

The show will air LIVE on Friday, June 11, at 12pm US Eastern Time.
Show Length: 1 Hour

Appear on Parents Tool Talk Web TV This Summer!

Have you ever been sitting around with friends and family and someone starts sharing a parenting challenge? Before you know it, everyone's putting in their two cents worth, trying to come up with ideas to be supportive (although the ideas aren't always helpful). If you've taken a Toolshop® class, you probably try sharing what you learned. Have you all ever gotten stuck and wondered WWJS (What Would Jody Say)? Well, I'd like to be more than a fly on the wall. I'd like to attend some get-togethers this summer where groups of parents meet, to answer any questions they have or problem-solve any challenges they are facing. No charge, just permission to videotape and share the results with other parents via the Parents Tool Talk Web TV show on the Parents Toolshop® YouTube Channel. I'll go anywhere within an hour of the Dayton/Cincinnati/Columbus Ohio area or where I'm traveling this summer (see next item). So, if you are planning a BBQ, swim party, playground outing, or just hanging out, let me know! I'll even consider private home visits, depending on the issue and location. Read more details HERE.

Looking to Speak While Traveling This Summer

I will be traveling to San Diego July 10-16 and most likely driving through PA to NY state Sept. 20-25, 2010. If you have a group of parents you would like me to give a presentation to, with open Q&A of course, I would be happy to do so. All I need is a location and assistance with publicity distribution! No charge, just a freewill fee & let me sell resources. Click these links for a list of parenting topics I can present. I can also offer professional CEU workshops for a participant fee. For more details, contact my Speaker Coordinator, Belinda Long, or me soon!

School Toolshop® Update

School Toolshop® is in full swing! I am available for parenting programs in school districts nationwide. School districts can also invite me to keynote parent conferences. If you would like to have a Parents Toolshop® program offered at your school, then download a brochure or contact our Speaker Coordinator, Belinda Long and have her send you one or more print brochures. A print brochure hand-delivered to a principal by a parent or professional, with a personal recommendation, is always the best way to bring Toolshop® programs to your district. By fall, there will also be experienced teachers who are certified Group Facilitators and available to present Teacher Toolshop® programs. You can check out the webpage above or contact Belinda for more details.

Follow Parents Toolshop® on Twitter

If you Tweet, join our new Parents Toolshop® Twitter Network! I'll be posting practical parenting tips and links to resources I discover that I think parents and family professionals might be interested in seeing.

Service Trade Opportunity

I am looking for one person to do a service trade over the summer. All you have to do is read The Parent's Toolshop® book and highlight 1-2 sentence parenting tips throughout the book. In exchange, I will give you 1 free pass to the Fall TIPS class (+ 1 free book if you return the highlighted one) That's a $300 value! Bonus trade: If you are local and willing to also copy/paste the tips from book files and format to our Twitter/Facebook needs, I will comp you into the next Stress-Free class (a $274 value!). If you are interested, send an e-mail with "Book Highlight Service Trade" in the subject line to Info@ParentsToolshop.com

Join Our Facebook Community

Are you on Facebook? If so, please connect with me and other parents in our community by posting on our page. I'd especially appreciate your comments about the book, teleseminars, radio show, or parenting classes. Some of the emails and comments parents have made to me directly would be valuable to share in a post, to help other parents feel affirmed and supported. I also think it helps parents to hear recommendations from other parents or to hear your experiences. This is a great way to do that. Here's what to do:

  1. Go to the Parents Toolshop® Facebook Page.
  2. Log in to Facebook by entering your username and password at the top of the page.
  3. Click the "Become a Fan" button.
  4. Enter your comment in the box marked "What's on your mind?" and click the "Share" button.

Improving Our Email List

We only want to send you the Parents Toolshop® news and information news that best matches your interests. So we are organizing our email list into specific groups, such as "Parents," "Parent Educators," "Foster Parents," and others. Within the next few months you may receive at least one confirmation email informing you that you've been added to one of these sub-groups. You'll have the opportunity to unsubscribe from whatever group we add you to, or request to be added to a different group.

Thanks for your patience as we work to minimize unwanted emails to your inbox, while at the same time ensuring that the information you receive is as relevant to you as possible!

In closing, I hope you have a Happy Father's Day and great month with your children. If you are traveling, remember to plan ahead and bring new games or pull out some of those old ones, so you all can play together. This helps foster family communication and helps prevent having children watch videos for hours on end. (I know, that's the easy solution, but it's not good for the kiddos.) Enjoy the sunshine, physical activity, and break from the busy spring schedule. I'll be in touch throughout the summer.
