Reviews of The Parent's Toolshop

“If you have kids–I don’t care what age–this book is IT. It’s like a parenting Bible.” - - Rain Morgan, PhD, host of “Mother Earth and Family,” KUCI-FM, Anaheim, CA

“I do this program 5 days a week. Regular listeners to the program know that I have a lot of parenting authors on the program. . . have for many years now. I don’t think I’ve ever seen – ever – any book as comprehensive. You can tell it’s a decade worth of work.” - - Dr. David McMillian, Host of Strategies for Living, KFLO-radio, Shreveport LA

“Ditch your Dr. Spock paperback; eschew Miss Manner’s guidebook on the proper way for your children to eat petit fours; pitch ‘Parenting for Dummies.’ This book is it – a parenting guide par excellence! It’s chock full of tips, trends and positive parenting techniques that are truly informative and most important – effective.” - - Lance Winkler, Oakwood Register, OH.

“If I had a million dollars, I’d buy up all of Jody’s books and give them to everybody who has any kind of interaction with children at all.” - - Rain Morgan, PhD, host of “Mother Earth and Family,” KUCI-FM, Anaheim, CA

PTC Business News

We were sad that Becky Dial, Jody’s Administrative Assistant, resigned from her position, but encourage her desire to devote herself to the home schooling of her two girls. She was a tremendous asset to PTC and covered the office while Jody was traveling the U.S. this fall.

We are thrilled to welcome Vicki Battin to the PTC team as Becky’s replacement. Vicki has a multitude of valuable skills, experience, and important connections for getting projects organized and finished. She’s already taken on the huge and important project of developing an Access database that will compile and cross-reference our many mailing lists. She is also helping us identify the gaps in our Group Facilitator certification process and automating our GF correspondence process. This will help us catch up on overdue correspondences, help us stay on track and prevent us from losing track of our many Group Facilitator inquirers and applicants. We sincerely hope Vicki will stay with PTC for “the long haul” as this is an exciting time in PTC’s growth and we see Vicki’s contributions being a crucial factor in our future success. Welcome, Vicki!

PTC President's News

In Fall, 2000, Jody spent an exciting two months training social-service professionals in Florida, California and Minnesota. Her trips were filled with exciting new adventures, many new contacts and leads and very few crises.

Tabletop exhibit at Florida Children’s Forum conference in Orlando, FL 10/00

Exhibit booth at the National Council on Family Relations conference in Minneapolis, MN 11/00

Jody exhibited at the NACCRRA/Florida Children’s Forum, Southern California AEYC and National Council on Family Relations annual conferences. There, she received wonderful compliments on the professionalism and quality of her exhibit booth display, which was written by Susan Kendrick and designed by David Ferguson, the PTC website designer. (See photos to right.)

While in each state/city, Jody also offered a one-day continuing education (CEU) workshop for family professionals. Feedback was quite positive, with many participants asking Jody to add a second day to the workshop schedule for practical application of the skills learned the first day. In Texas (February) and California (March), Jody will test this new format. (See GF Section below for schedule details.)

In California, 20 people expressed an interest in Group Facilitator (GF) certification. To date, 9 have purchased a Group Facilitator pre-certification kit. In Minnesota, 6 people expressed interested in certification and 13 people did so in Florida, where 4 people have purchased a GF kit. Many of these potential GFs are actively pursuing their pre-certification requirements, so GF certification training workshops are planned in Ohio and California for March (see the schedules section of this website or the Group Facilitator section of this newsletter below). Once at least 4 Florida GF applicants are ready for certification, a certification-training workshop will be scheduled there, too.

Parenting Advice Corner

Parents’ Question:

My three-year-old son is very active and gets more so around bedtime. We have a routine that begins at 8:30 p.m. and includes a bath, healthy snack, storytelling, teeth brushing and three books. After I turn out the lights, I sit by the bed until he falls asleep. Otherwise he will jump up and follow me, making a game out of us chasing him. When he does, I bring him back to bed, tell him he doesn't have to go to sleep but he must stay in his room. Most nights I lie next to him and hold him so he can't get up. He cries in protest and eventually falls asleep from the exhaustion. By then, I’ve fallen asleep too.

My husband and I have tried turning out all of the house lights, pretend to go to bed and get up after he was asleep. This sort of worked, but sometimes he fell asleep as late as midnight and we were exhausted. Now I'm toying with the idea of putting an outside lock on his door. This approach seems barbaric, but if we don't get some sleep soon we're going to fall apart. Please advise!!!

News for Parent Educators

Group Facilitator News

New Group Facilitators, who graduated from the 9/00 certification training in Dayton. (L to R) Annette Poth, Jill Parker, Kathy Peroutka

Three new Tour Guides graduated from the September certification training in Dayton. Welcome these new Group Facilitators to our nationwide team:

Annette Poth is a Parent’s Toolshop parent educator consultant who has quickly gotten her feet wet teaching Toolshop programs for PTC through the Greene County Combined Health District in Xenia, Ohio. She is also teaching the Winter quarter classes at Families Count in Dayton, which will help her receive her final certification this month.

Jill Parker works at Montgomery County Combined Health District in Dayton, Ohio, where she provides a wide variety of family life education programs to the public and community-based sponsors. She also taught a special two-part topic program for the Families Count Project at the Erma’s House visitation center in Dayton, which helped her earn her final Group Facilitator certificate.

Kathy Peroutka works at the Women’s Recovery Center in Xenia, Ohio, where she sees many parallels between Toolshop teachings and recovery issues. She’s been co-teaching (and solo teaching) the full-length Toolshop program with Deanna Todd in preparation for receiving her final certification.

The Families Count Project of Catholic Social Services has hired a new Toolshop Group Facilitator parent educator to provide ongoing programming in the Miami Valley (OH) area. Cambra Mockabee will be attending the March Group Facilitator certification training in Dayton. We’ll share her more complete bio in the next newsletter, along with the other applicants who graduated. Welcome Cambra!

PTLeader Standards & Practices Committee

The new 2001 members held their first quarterly meeting Monday, January 29, 2001. All active Group Facilitator applicants and certified Group Facilitators will receive a list of their contact numbers.

Primary members (who serve as liaisons for Group Facilitator applicants):

Mary Ann Holevas (Columbus, OH)

Nancy Ordonio (Niceville, FL)

Denise Jenkins (Beavercreek, OH)

Deanna Todd (Kettering, OH)

Secondary members:

Deb Ruscitelli (Oakwood, OH)

As we expand nationwide, it has been a challenge to make the certification process quick and easy without sacrificing the quality programming that is a trademark of Parent’s Toolshop programs. As Group Facilitator applicants nationwide join our team, we’ve recognized loopholes and oversights we’d never thought of before and had many agenda items to discuss. Below, read the amendments they made to the PTLeader Standards & Practices Manual. All active inquirers, applicants and Group Facilitators will receive a complimentary printed copy of these amendments and a revised manual the next time they are printed.

Amendments to the PTLeader Standards & Practices Manual

Effective 1/29/01:

I. GF classifications and fee splits: Page 3

A.  There is a new GF classification, “Private Consultant” (different from “PTC Consultants”). These are GFs who are self-employed, own their own consulting or counseling practice and pay for their own business expenses.

1. These “Private consultants” will only be required to submit a 10% fee split of speaker or program registration fees. They will report on same schedule as PTC GF Consultants.

2. These GFs will need to submit proof of business ownership (such as a copy of their Certificate of Incorporation, issued by the applicable Secretary of State) to qualify for this classification.

3. More specific details and clarifications will be incorporated into the next reprinting of the S&P manual.

II. Status changes and correspondence triggers: These will be incorporated throughout the revised S&P manual and are included on a new "Steps of the Pre- and Post-Certification Process" handout every level of Group Facilitator will receive (from inquirer to Active certified Group Facilitators.)

A. "Browsers" can pick up a free brochure that summarizes the certification process. (to be developed)

B. "Inquirers" are people who want more detailed information and purchase the S&P manual for $2.00. Their status becomes “GF inquirer” and PTC will correspond with them for up to 1 year.

C. "Pre-applicants" are people who have purchased a GF Application Kit for They receive specialized correspondence to track their progress on meeting the pre-certification requirements. Group Facilitator liaisons are now assigned when someone purchases a kit and will assist PTC with follow-up calls.

D. "Applicants" have actually submitted their application and Part I of the study guide, triggering their commitment to complete the pre-certification requirements. These applicants will receive specialized notices about upcoming training events and other news that affects applicants and certified Group Facilitators. There will be trigger correspondences throughout the pre-certification process to encourage them to keep up with assignments so they can avoid extension fees.

1. Pre-certification extension fees. Applicants may apply for a one-time six-month extension for $50. After one year, they need to restart the pre-certification process.

E. "Certified Group Facilitators" still follow the various status categories: Active, Inactive, Expired, Terminated, Revoked. See pages 15 & 16 for details.

III. PTC/S&P’s authority to screen out inappropriate inquirers/applicants. Page 9

A. “The S&P committee, under the guidance of the PTC president and/or author of the copyrighted materials to which instructors are representatives, reserve the right to deny certification to any applicant that demonstrates behavior or qualities that could potentially blemish the positive reputation of PTC and/or The Parent's Toolshop. These include but are not limited to unprofessional, unethical or illegal behavior or activities, proven or unproven in a court of law, negative reference reports or poor financial standing with PTC. The S&P committee may not, however, discriminate against any applicant due to race, culture, religion, gender or other Equal Opportunity Employer guidelines. In the event that such denial occurs, PTC agrees to reimburse the applicant for any certification fees they have incurred, including the application kit ($50) and certification training ($500), with the exception of educational workshop fees paid to witness 6 hours of Toolshop program.”

IV. Initial probation:  page 9

A. Probationary program provision: Probationary GFs have up to six months in which to solo teach at least one program that is a minimum of two hours long and covers at least three “toolsets” from The Parent's Toolshop. Upon submitting evaluations (and skill assessments if appropriate) for that program, they will receive their final Group Facilitator certification (certificate and ID badge).

1. There will be several contacts made by PTC and the probationary GF's liaison to support and assist in meeting this requirement.

2. If a probationary GF still hasn’t submitted results at 6 months, they can apply for up to 3 six-month extensions. The first is $50, the second is $75 the third is $100.

3. After two years, their status is changed to “inactive.” (See page 15 of S&P manual.)

4. If a probationary GF or certified GF either changes his/her mind about being a GF or“declines” their certification prior to the two-year certification deadline or recertification period, their status will be listed as “terminated.” (See page 16 of the S&P manual.)

V. Additional benefits for S&P members: Page 12 & 13

A. If a primary or secondary GF serves on the S&P committee for 2 consecutive years and is an active member who meets all performance, liaison and attendance requirements of S&P committee membership, PTC will waive their recertification fee.

B. S&P members will receive a complimentary PEPtalk magazine subscription for parent educators. Other GFs can get a discount subscription by ordering with PTC’s group rate.

Professional Conferences
