PTC Encourages Supporting Families During National Crisis

Parent’s Toolshop Consulting, along with our staff and representatives nationwide, unite in expressing our sympathy and support to those directly affected by the multiple terrorist tragedies on and since September 11th. We join in solidarity with people of all faiths, cultures and nationalities to offer our prayers for community and world leaders, who are faced with the difficult task of preventing or responding to such terrorism.

Each of us, in our own way and in our own little corner of the world, has been affected by recent events. We can benefit from the support and comfort of others as we cope with the loss, fear, and confusion these events have caused. As we each struggle to achieve a sense of normalcy and build our “new reality,” let us reach out to others. By giving support and encouragement to others, we receive the same in return. Such unity will give us the strength to face whatever lies ahead.

Children are full of questions and believe their parents have all the answers. Today, parents are just as full of questions as their children. They are searching just as hard for answers and explanations from which they can make some sense of all that has happened. Parents know their children look to them for comfort and security – and it’s difficult for parents to offer such reassurance when each headline and broadcast brings more shocking news.

There is much support available for parents and the professionals who touch their lives each day. Here are just a few of the ideas and resources we’ve found to be helpful:

Parents

·         Parents may have continuing concerns about how to discuss children’s concerns and answer their questions. On 9-11-01, PTC received over 40 e-mails with resources and articles about this subject. The most comprehensive listing is at http://www.familyinfoserv.com/crisis.html. This listing could be a handout parent educators share with parents when discussing this topic.

·         Parents and children want to feel they are doing something supportive and helpful during this time of national need. Parents and their children can discuss ways to give community service as a family. For example, if children ask what’s being done about starving Afghan children, brainstorm ways to raise funds to donate to that cause – or to donate to hungry children in the U.S., whom some children are concerned will be neglected by focusing attention on international aid. Reach out to friends and neighbors of Middle Eastern descent to show your acceptance and support. Invite them to the park or playground with you, helping them feel welcome and accepted at a time when many are feeling judged and suspect by others.

·         Use this international crisis to learn more about world cultures, religions, governments and geography. “Knowledge is power,” as the saying goes, and many conflicts and prejudices have their roots in ignorance. Encourage reading and have open discussions with your children, at whatever level is age-appropriate. If we can use these tragedies for good and learning, each of us can become better informed and more giving.

Parent Educators

·         The Fall 2001 issue of Peptalk, a quarterly newsletter for parent educators published by Parenting Press, has a presentation plan for a one hour workshop entitled “Talking to Kids about Violence,” complete with a handout and four interactive exercises. Yearly subscriptions are $24.95 (additional group subscriptions are $5/each). To request a reprint of this presentation plan or to subscribe, call 206-364-2900, office@ParentingPress.com.

·         Parent educators can use The Parent’s Toolshop to plan other related parent topic discussion groups. We suggest Stop ‘Tolerating’ Diversity – Appreciate It: Teaching/Modeling Respect For All Races/Cultures” referencing the “Teaching Children Values: Appreciating Diversity” section of Chapter 6, Independence Toolset (page 149). Have the group brainstorm specific ways they can implement those suggestions in their family or community. Also, reference the “Children and Stress” section of Chapter 9, Keep Your Cool Toolset (page 250), for suggestions on discussing difficult topics with children and how to offer reassurance to children in times of loss, grief, or tragedy.

·         Tell sponsors you will donate a percentage of your program fee to a disaster-relief fund or a charity of your or the sponsor’s choice. If your programs are free, offer the option of participants making a donation for attending your program, with all or part of it earmarked for a disaster relief fund.

PTC President’s News

Jody was busy traveling and training all summer. In June and July, she traveled to the Ft. Walton Beach (FL) area, for a Group Facilitator certification training and a full-day staff training for the Okaloosa County Head Start. While there, she did a book signing at the Destin Barnes & Noble store.

In August, she took a week-long trip to Texas, for certification training in Houston and a two-day workshop in Midland (TX) for the Region 18 Early Childhood Intervention Annual Conference.

Upon her return, she had requests from agents wanting to review proposals and sample chapters from her next project: the T.I.P.S. (Tools for Improving Parenting Skills) series of three books, one each for parents of tots, teens and “tweens.” She also finished developing and editing the Group Facilitator certification training videos and the new resources for parents and parent educators (see “Ambris Publishing News” below).

Her next trip will be to the NCFR conference in Rochester (NY) (see the “Professional Conferences” section below), where she will greet participants and autograph books at the Parent’s Toolshop exhibit booth and will attend the conference as a participant.

Parenting Advice Corner

Question: My son will be 4 in September. He is trying to remain a baby. We do not encourage any type of behavior that he should be past. For example, at daycare he will go into the infant area and ask for a bottle: He tries to get us to rock him to sleep at night and he is practically glued to me when we are home. I only work part time, and make it a point to spend one on one quality time with him. He does not want to try anything new. I have watched the other children in his daycare and most stare at him as if he is really weird. His swimming teacher thinks he has low self-esteem. How do I get him to move on and act more his age?

Families Count Project of Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley

For upcoming parenting class schedules, go to the CSSMV website, click on the “Families Count” and then on the “Schedules” link.

(The following offer is for community sponsors in the Dayton, Ohio, area)

For a limited time . . . Bring our nationally-recognized parenting programs to your parents at your location — absolutely FREE!

Families Count offers FREE training for your staff, volunteers or the parents you serve. We will custom-design each program to meet your specific needs. All of our programs are interactive — which makes learning fun — and offer personalized problem-solving and skill practice. We’ll even provide outcome-focused skill assessments of each participant and a summary report, if you request one.

The United Way and Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley fund this program so we can offer our services free of charge. All we ask in return is that you share the resources you already have: meeting space, publicity, registration coordination, child care (if needed), security and a guarantee of at least 10 participants. For parenting programs, we ask that the public be allowed to participate (up to 25 total participants). That’s it! We’ll even provide publicity masters and registration materials.

Think about your staff training needs, do they work with parents or children? Would you like to improve inter-organizational communication and productivity? Do you use volunteers who work with parents or children? Are there teachers in your organization who work with children? Think about the ways we can assist, empower and motivate others in your organization — staff or clientele.

When applicants finish the pre-certification process, they have up to 6 months to attend a certification training. There is no fee for this grace period. There are no guarantees of the location of the training, but PTC guarantees to provide at least one certification training within that period. If applicants choose not to attend training and wait longer than 6 months, they must apply and pay for a one-time extension ($50). All applicants must attend certification training within 2 years from the date of their kit purchase. If they fail to do this, their status changes to “terminated” (page 16 of S&P manual) and applicants must start the pre-certification process anew.”
