Women's Recovery Center Holds "Meet The Author" Luncheon

This is the first book I ever bought--and I'm a Grandma! I read it and use it every day. I showed it to my daughter and she, too, is using it. - - Mary Beth

Deanna Campbell Todd teaches several Parent's Toolshop parenting classes each week in Greene Co. (OH), including one at the Women's Recovery Center in Xenia. Deanna doesn't require participants to purchase a book, but makes copies available to them. Nevertheless, many choose to purchase a copy of their own.

Mary Beth, a forty-something grandma, asked Deanna if she could buy a book, commenting "This is the first book I ever bought!" Deanna was astounded. She shared the testimonial with Jody, who was profoundly touched that someone who has never purchased a book would choose her book as the first book they would buy. "This," she told Deanna, "is the real reason I spent 15 years writing a book. I feel so honored that big-name authors and nationally-known parenting experts have endorsed my book, but this testimonial means even more to me. If my writing can motivate someone to read, then I'm helping them in two ways: improving their reading and their relationships."

Jody told Deanna she'd like to meet Mary Beth and autograph her book, which Deanna said would be as exciting as bringing Elvis back from the grave! (We all love Deanna's sense of humor!) Jody said, "I'd love to come and visit the women in the center, but I don't want you to make any fuss, okay?" Deanna agreed . . . but she lied.

Mary Beth and her class planned a "Meet the Author" luncheon for Jody. The women banded together to plan the menu, decorations and gifts. It gave them a project and sense of purpose that spurred them during the weeks leading up to the event.

On Friday, August 18, almost thirty women residents dressed in their Sunday-best and welcomed Jody with open arms. They escorted her into a room decorated with streamers, balloons, banners and signs. They talked about parenting, recovery, writing and pursuing their dreams. They asked Jody's advice and shared their appreciation for Deanna, her classes, Jody and The Parent's Toolshop.

About ten minutes into the visit, a woman walked up and handed Jody a hand-sketched portrait she had just drawn, there on the spot. She turned it into a card and passed it around for all the women to sign. After an hour, a handful of women donned aprons and served a delicious, nutritious lunch.

The women formed two lines to have their photo taken with Jody as she autographed their copies of The Parent's Toolshop, their address books or any book a resident had on hand.

Then Mary Beth, on behalf of the women, presented Jody with heartfelt gifts: a T-shirt signed by all the women residents, a beautiful houseplant in a hand-painted pot and a bath set. In return, Jody sent the center personalized, autographed copies of the photos and her personal copy of Clean and Sober Parenting: A Guide to Help Recovering Parents (now out of print), autographed by the author, Jane Nelsen.

The two-hour luncheon was over in a wink, but the love, support and encouragement they shared are sure to hold a warm spot in each person's heart for many years to come.

BOOK REVIEWS OF THE PARENT'S TOOLSHOP

Here are practical solutions, not just philosophy. Some books warn what not to do. Pawel has an almost bottomless "tool box" of things to do, where and when. Quick fixes and contradictory stuff are omitted. The author has assembled an organized program of related solutions that respect all sides in a conflict and suggest procedures with clarity. . . Incisive text, effective exercises, 100 "best-of" skills. Extensive research and testing gives this masterpiece a leg up. - - The Book Reader, Spring/Summer 2000

The Parent's Toolshop is several books' worth of good parenting material in one place. Covering the gamut from listening skills and communication to discipline and self-esteem, the author's compassionate solutions honor the needs of everyone in the family. Melissa Chianta, Mothering magazine, May/June, 2000

This book covers everything from problems with sharing to curfews and creating parenting styles for divorced parents with different ideas. . . The book teaches parents how to build "toolsets" to help them deal with different situations and build a healthy family. . . Instead of quick fixes, readers will be led through three questions to determine the best course of action for dealing with a situation. Brenda Rindge, The Post and Courier, Charleston (SC) 8/17/00

I just received the book today and started jumping around its various topics. And all I have to say is, what a wonderful book! Much laud and praise for your book. I'm going to recommend it to friends and family! - - Brendan DeLumpa, AuthorsDen.com and father of six children (Brendan and Jody are discussing the possibility of her speaking at his church in California.)

This award-winning one-stop resource introduces the "Universal Blueprint," a revolutionary problem-solving system found nowhere else. Its profound revelations and 100+ practical language and action tools empower parents to find a customized solution to any parenting challenge - from toddlers to teens and beyond. - -Carl Lennertz, BookSense, July, 2000

Over 50 bookstores responded to Carl's review (above) by requesting books. Several weeks later, a buyer at the Horned Owl Bookstore in Lafayettesville, CO called . . . "I listed The Parent's Toolshop in our 'New Titles' newsletter and put it on the shelf face out. We opened the store, the first customer walked in . . . and 15 minutes later she bought it! We all just stood there astounded-and laughed at how quickly it flew off the shelf! How can I order more?"

PTC BUSINESS NEWS

PTC Welcomes New Staff

Becky Dial, a former member of The Family Network (which Jody founded) and a Parents Toolshop graduate joined the Parents Toolshop Consulting staff as Jody's Administrative Assistant. Becky's organizational and computer skills have helped launch many projects that were sitting in a pile. Becky home schools her two preteen daughters and lives about five minutes away from Jody, so the arrangement is mutually convenient. Congratulations and welcome Becky! It's great to have you on board and we appreciate, already, all you've done to help PTC and Ambris succeed.

New Program for Teachers Classrooms--From the Parents' Perspective: Insights for Building Teacher/Parent Cooperation helps teachers build trust and cooperation in their relationships with parents. They learn about the 5 parenting styles and how they influence a parent's involvement with school personnel or how they handle discipline and homework problems at home. Jody offered this six-hour training program to the staff of Cherrington Elementary in the Westerville (OH) school district. About 15 teachers, counselors and administrators attended and dynamic discussions filled the day. Critical language skills, such as F-A-X Listening and descriptive encouragement, were key components of the agenda. Individualized problem-solving also resulted in some fresh ideas to use in some long-standing problems the staff had been facing. The response to the workshop was very positive. Now, Zana Vincent with the Regional Professional Development Center in Columbus, has asked Jody to offer this workshop for Central Ohio teachers on November 30. She's might even invite Dr. Zelman, the State Superintendent, to attend! If you'd like Jody to offer this program in your district, have the professional development coordinator call her at 1-877-748-4541.

College Students to Study TPT

Kevin Hoffman, who teaches a class about parent education at North Central University in Minnesota, received a brochure about PTC's upcoming professional training schedules. He called Jody to express interest in having his students review and critique The Parent's Toolshop. (Of course, Jody said "Yes!") This group project will also require students to present one topic from the curriculum. Their report will be available in December, so we'll pass on the results in the following newsletter.

AMBRIS PUBLISHING NEWS

Book Expo America Reaps Benefits

It is difficult to manage the business details of independent publishing while pursuing important writing and speaking projects, so Jody and her husband, Steve, went to the BookExpo hoping to find some new resources. They really didn't know what to expect at BEA and didn't have any goals-until after the first day. Steve chatted with Jack Canfield, Chicken Soup for the Soul author, thanking him for endorsing The Parent's Toolshop. Jack said they found a publisher at BEA by going booth to booth. Steve and Jody spent the next morning highlighting publishers of parenting book and spent the next day and a half "working the floor." By the end of the show, they had found about 6 publishers interested in reviewing the book (and/or future books)! Now Jody needs to decide whether to approach small publishers on her own or seek acceptance with big NY publishers with the help of a literary agent.

Another high point was meeting the staff of our publicity firm, MarketAbility, in person! Jody talks to them in Colorado almost daily and has met one of the founders, Tami DePalma.

Jody volunteered at the MarketAbility booth for several hours to meet the staff, who introduced her to media connections, new resources and gave her personal introductions to some of the "big names" in independent publishing. Jody's "main man," Bradley James, is her primary account manager who has set up almost daily media interviews for her. It was great Jody could finally meet Bradley and soak up his enthusiasm and support firsthand. (Photo: Jody and her MarketAbility cohorts "twist and clout"at their booth (L to R): Sheri Eisenhauer, Kim Dushinski, Tami DePalma, Jody Pawel)

While at BookExpo, Tami DePalma met with a NY agent who expressed an interest in representing Jody to big NY publishers. While that lead ultimately didn't work out, she will be representing Jody to at least 6 agents at the Maui Writer's Conference in September. This is the conference for writers to attend as nearly 100 agents and publishers are in one place and totally accessible. Not all writers can make the expensive trip, so having someone like the dynamic perky Tami DePalma networking, pressing palms and sharing smiles on Jody's behalf is sure to result in some great leads.

One of the funnier moments at BookExpo were the celebrity impersonators who were promoting their book, "Made You Look!," which is also represented by MarketAbility. At a client party one evening, cohosted by MarketAbility and Jenkins Group (bookpublishing.com), celebrity impersonators Cher, Madonna, Tina Turner, Mike Tyson, and the Pope all made an appearance.

It was hilarious to see the reactions of passersby who did a double-take, sought autographs, or insisted they were "real" stars who had great plastic surgeons!

The Parent's Toolshop is Officially Worldwide!

Jody autographed over 30 books at Book Expo America for parents, book buyers, librarians and collectors. As a result, Ambris received an order of 25 books from Garden Style of Trinidad & Tobago in the West Indies!

ACCESS Publishers Network Files for Bankruptcy

It wouldn't be fair to share all this wonderful news with our supporters, without also being honest about some of the down times and struggles of independent publishing. ACCESS Publishers Network is Ambris Publishing's distributor. This means they are responsible for generating interest in our books with bookstore buyers and processing all bookstore and library orders. In July, a group of unpaid creditors filed a motion to force ACCESS into bankruptcy, so ACCESS voluntarily filed for reorganization. All debts prior to that filing date cannot be paid until the issue is resolved and all accounts restart with a zero balance. It is also questionable whether the reorganization will succeed or the company will ultimately file for bankruptcy, with all creditors receiving zero to two cents on the dollar. Regardless, the bottom line reality for Ambris Publishing is that we have not received one cent for any bookstore sales and may never see what is owed us. When rumors of this problem surfaced, Ambris moved 90% of its inventory to BookMasters warehouse and fulfillment services in Ashland, OH, so we couldn't lose our inventory. We are a part of the creditor's group lawsuit, but we are owed so much less than companies who have been with ACCESS for years, we don't anticipate receiving much or any of what is owed us. This serious financial setback is one reason Jody will be seeking an agent, large publisher, more speaking engagements and will be traveling more to offer professional training workshops in the upcoming months. The Parent's Toolshop is so well received wherever it's known that the potential for success is promising-but in the meantime our purse strings will be tight as we spread the word and try to recoup some of our losses.

PARENTING ADVICE CORNER

Parents' Question:

Bedtime for my 29-month-old son is HORRIBLE! Routines DON'T help. If I hear the "make sure you have a routine" diatribe again I'll go crazy. We still keep a steady routine of Bath, Brush, Bed and Books but he still throws a fit every night. The worst part is that every night he throws a fit I get frustrated...my wife gets frustrated with me...and we end up mad at each other. HELP!

- - Craig & Paula, St. Louis, MO

PARENT'S TOOLSHOP IN THE MEDIA

National TV Appearance Possible

Sally Stitch interviewed Jody for the "Mommy vs. Nanny," article that appeared in the July/August 2000 issue of Working Mother magazine. Amy Chiaro, a producer at the NBC Weekend Today Show saw the article and asked Jody if she was interested in doing a live national TV interview about "Caregiver Clashes." (What do you think Jody said?) The election conventions bumped the story off their schedule (hopefully not permanently), but with one toe in the door Jody hopes another opportunity will open up soon.

Weekly Radio Guest Appearance Promising

In July, Rain Morgan (aka Mother Earth) interviewed Jody on her weekly radio show in Anaheim, CA. She was so pleased with the practical information Jody offered, she asked her National Public Radio station if she could start an additional show just for parents that would feature Jody as a weekly guest. Rain's show(s) airs in the Los Angeles area, the second largest media market in the country!

Rain and Jody taped a one-hour show on 8/21/00 for the producers to review. In Jody's introduction, Rain said, "I've had a lot of parenting experts on this show and I highly respect all of them. . . But of them all, Jody Pawel's advice kicks butt! I love having her on my show--so much so that I want her on every week!" The producer will make a decision within a week or so and the signs looks promising.

In addition to featuring Jody each week and opening the line for call-in advice, Rain is starting a support group for parents who want to study . . . you guessed it . . . The Parent's Toolshop! They will meet regularly, read a chapter or two, discuss the reading, do individualized problem solving and offer support and encouragement to each other. Jody has invited Rain to her 10/30/00 seminar in nearby Walnut, CA, as Rain may choose to get Toolshop Group Facilitator certification! Regardless, Rain is enthusiastically promoting The Parent's Toolshop to her listeners, family and friends because she is passionately committed to helping parents be the best parents they can be and to avoid or break cycles of abuse and ineffective parenting. She is also a loving grandmother and friend to many parents who ask her advice.

Central CA listeners can tune in Mondays at 9 a.m. PST (noon EST) at 88.9 FM. Tune in, anywhere in the world, via the Internet by going to http://www.kuci.org/ If Jody will be a weekly guest, e-mail newsletter subscribers will receive notice of the new program's time slot to tune in.

Radio Show on Tape

Angela Brown, from the Words of Wellness radio show, interviewed Jody for "Tools to Transform Your Parenting," which will air in Dec. 2000. PTC e-mail subscribers will receive a list of radio stations across the country airing the show. The show will also be available as an audiotape for public purchase through Ambris Publishing, WordsofWellness.com, Amazon.com, and LifeLongProductions.com stores. WordsofWellness.com has a place where fans and friends can leave their comments regarding this show, or their comments on the book or seminar(s) they've heard Jody give. Get a discussion group going by having your family and friends go to www.WordsofWellness.com under the show Tools to Transform Your Parenting show #349 (This will appear on the Words of Wellness site in Nov.)

Here is a list of other media appearances Jody Pawel has made since the last newsletter. Join the PTC e-mail list to get notices of any media appearances in your area.

    TOUR GUIDE NEWS

    Group Facilitator Certification Training

Three new Group Facilitators will attend the September 14-16 GF certification training. We'll introduce you to our new Group Facilitators in the next newsletter.

    Group Facilitator Updates

There are dozens of active certified ToolshopSM Group Facilitators throughout the U.S. Here is what is happening with some of them. Group Facilitators, please send updates about your ToolshopSM activities and any schedules for programs you are offering to the general public to the PTC home office.

Deb Ruscitelli is expecting a baby around the Thanksgiving holidays! She is feeling well, but understandably tired. She has cut back from four jobs to two, including resigning from her position as the PTC Group Facilitator Coordinator, and is trying to make her schedule even more manageable. Deb is still active on the S&P Committee and has continued to be a correspondence study liaison, which are not time-consuming activities. We'll introduce you to her new baby in the next newsletter!

Karen Argadine and Deb Ruscitelli are collaborating on a special workbook for parents of explosive children. Group Facilitators see many parents who are dealing with this problem and Deanna Todd asked these two child therapists for guidance. Squeezing this project into their already busy schedules has been difficult, but they are steadily pulling together a resource all Tour Guides will be able to use in the future.

MaryAnn Holevas is a Group Facilitator in the Columbus (OH) area. After leaving Directions for Youth, Maryann has been a substitute teacher while looking for opportunities to use her Master's-level counseling, public speaking skills and Parent's ToolshopSM certification. Mary Ann was recently hired by Delaware County (OH) Juvenile Court as a Family Advocate where she will be doing family counseling and can provide parenting classes. Mary Ann says the county is very progressive and currently uses the Active Parenting curriculum. Mary Ann told the coordinator about The Parent's Toolshop, its reference of and consistency with AP teachings and its additional features, which offer parents and instructors more information and options than AP. The coordinator will be calling Jody to discuss the possibility of training all the advocates in Toolshop teachings and using the curriculum for some of their programming. Thanks, Mary Ann, for spreading the word! We are always pleased when program professionals recognize the difference between giving parents answers and using the Universal Blueprint® to teach parents how to think for themselves and find their own answers!

Nancy Ordonia, the "Outstanding Group Facilitator of 1998," moved back to Florida last year and has finally gotten settled into her job at Child Care Services, a resource and referral agency in Niceville. She will be presenting a workshop based on The Parent's Toolshop at the Florida Children's Forum conference in Orlando in October. (See "Parent Educator Resources" section for details.) She may also provide a parenting class for the Even Start program through her employer. A local elementary school has also asked her to provide a Parent's Toolshop program for them this fall. Nancy's programs are always a big hit, so we are confident this will be just the beginning of her Toolshop practice started in Florida.

Pam Bonsper recently finished The Parent's Toolshop Puzzler, which offers a different puzzle for each chapter of the book. Toolshop Group Facilitators and other parent educators will be able to use this resource as an interactive activity or homework assignment in their parenting classes. We will announce its availability in this newsletter when it's ready for distribution. Pam is also planning to offer a parenting class in the Carmel (CA) area this fall through the Salinas Adult Education School. She will also be assisting Jody when at the professional workshop she's offering in Monterey (CA).

There are two levels of committee membership: meeting attendance only and "grading" pre-certification materials. Commensurate discounts on products/services compensate members for their time.

One-year terms begin Sept. 2000. Members are active Group Facilitators who attend 4 quarterly meetings from Sept. 2000- Sept. 2001. See the S&P manual or call any current S&P member for more information. Come to the September meeting and offer your ideas for maintaining the quality reputation of PTC Group Facilitators.

Join the Group Facilitator Advice Team

We'd like to invite all ToolshopSM Group Facilitators to submit articles of interest to parents and offer advice to parents who submit questions to the PTC website and newsletter. We'd like to have a list of Group Facilitators who will give advice so we can direct questions to them based on their areas of expertise. This is your opportunity to help parents and to build your expertise as a parent educator. Answers to questions will be posted in the e-mail newsletter and PTC website. If you are interested in being on this list of advisors, send an e-mail to Jody Pawel.
